You’ve Entered THE WORLD OF FOOL FOR LOVE
by SAM SHEPARD
ON THE EDGE OF SOMEWHERE
From the moment you arrive tonight, you've stepped into Fool for Love. The people who welcome you, the music drifting through The Palms, the passing conversations, and the moments unfolding around you are all part of the same world. Together, we're creating a place you wander into rather than one that begins when the lights go down.
To us, this play unfolds in fragments: pieces of what happened, what was imagined, and what the characters need to believe is true. It circles back on itself. It contradicts itself. It asks us to question: What's real? What's remembered? And are those things ever truly different? Is this all happening in May's mind? Is it a kind of purgatory? Is it simply another night destined to repeat itself? We don't think the play asks us to choose. Instead, it invites us to sit in the uncertainty.
That same sense of place drew us here. Sam Shepard set Fool for Love in "a low-rent motel on the edge of the Mojave," and the deeper we got into rehearsals, the more we realized the desert wasn't simply the backdrop of the play. Eddie's stories point to landmarks and roads that still exist around us. Driving to The Palms, we found ourselves passing places mentioned in the script, as though the landscape had been quietly waiting for us all along. Rather than transporting the play somewhere new, we wanted to return it to the desert that shaped it.
In our production, the motel room exists like a snapshot dropped into the middle of the desert: isolated, exposed, and strangely recognizable. Beyond it, time feels thin. People seem to arrive from somewhere just out of reach, and the past refuses to stay buried. More than anyone, May is trying to hold herself together while Eddie crashes through her life like a storm she's survived before. What is the pact between Eddie and May? Is it love? Trauma? A secret? A promise neither of them remembers making, yet neither can seem to break? The Old Man drifts between witness and ghost, father and myth, while poor Martin, like all of us, is simply trying to make sense of what he's walked into.
Visually, we found inspiration in desert ghost towns, roadside Americana, the feeling of finding yourself on the edge of town somewhere near the end of the world, the emotional logic of a country song, the sandworm sequences in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice, and the feeling of Groundhog Day— if it had been directed by David Lynch.
Thank you for joining us on the loop. If you find yourself wondering whether something is part of the play, it probably is.
MEET THE CAST & CREATIVE TEAM
Lette Allen (May / Producer / Immersive Experience Director)
Originally from Alabama, Lette has spent nearly two decades of her life creating theatre everywhere she goes: from self-producing plays in Chicago storefront theaters, to workshopping her own original musical in Barcelona, to performing and directing on Equity stages in NYC, at Fringe festivals, and in plenty of other unconventional spaces in between. Whether acting, directing, producing, singing, or writing, she's happiest gathering people around an idea and discovering what can only be made together.
Now putting down roots in the Hi-Desert, she is passionate about ensemble-driven storytelling, developing new work, reimagining familiar stories through a fresh lens, and creating art that fosters genuine human connection, both onstage and off. Favorite roles include Christina in Red Light Winter, Titania in A Midsummer Night's Dream, and now, May.
One of her favorite things about acting is getting to know a character and, in turn, learning something about herself. May has reminded her that recognizing a pattern is one thing, and finding the courage to break it is another. When she's not making theatre, you'll likely find her enthusiastically talking about frogs, spending quality time with her dogs, or telling you about the latest sound bath or healing circle she attended.
She is endlessly grateful to the artists who have poured their hearts into this production. Lette hopes tonight leaves you curious to see what The Karma Compound dreams up next. Thank you for being here!
Deacon Ledges (Eddie)
Deacon is thrilled to be back at The Palms, where 13 years ago he shot the music video for The Freedom Ledges' "Jailbreak (Bonnie & Clyde)."
Deacon was raised in the woods of Maine and has a BFA in Acting from Syracuse University.
Theater credits in NYC & LA include Oberon in A Midsummer Night's Dream, Frank-n-Furter in Rocky Horror and Horatio in Hamlet. Since moving to 29 Palms he has played Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire and Pilate in Jesus Christ Superstar at Theatre29.
On television, he has appeared in American Crime Story: The People vs. OJ Simpson and AMC's The American West. Recent film work includes The Singe and 60 Dates in 6 Months.
Much love to his Lady, Miss Catt Christine.
Michael D. Simpson (Martin/ Fight Captain)
Michael is an actor, singer, and artist that is proud to call the Hi-Desert his home. For several years, he toured the country with his fiancé and their award-winning Fringe show, Desperate to Be Seen, Horrified of Being Known: A Ghost Story - a journey that ultimately led them to The Palms and started them off on an incredible new chapter.
Since then, they have co-created and starred in a variety of projects including A Swingin' Seasonal Spectacular and Things That Go Bump in the Night. Michael's past acting credits include Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid, the Bosun in Boarded! An Immersive Pirate Adventure, Eddie/Dr. Scott in Inspiration's Edge's production of The Rocky Horror Show, Lord Bromley in the original comedy Fortressed, and appearances in Theatre 29's cabarets Miscast and All You Need Is Love.
He is grateful to be part of the Hi-Desert's vibrant creative community and excited to be joining the cast of Fool for Love.
Kevin Bone (The Old Man)
Actor, writer, producer, director, storyteller, drummer, photographer...Kevin Bone is of the “only one life to live” school, figuring that he doesn’t have that much to lose by trying something he hasn’t done before. Hence auditioning* for this exciting production of Fool For Love, the first full-length ensemble play he’s ever been involved with.
Kevin’s 2nd one-person show, Kate’s Last Dance (which he wrote, produced and performed), was well received in Hollywood as well as at Theatre 29. He’s looking forward to bringing a third solo show, Matter, to the stage sometime next year, but in the meantime you’ll likely see him on a stage whenever he’s got a crazy idea, or helping his wife Laura Sibley run his favorite roadhouse on the planet...The Palms. He didn’t audition.
They needed an old man who could sit in a chair and talk, and he nailed it.
Vic Terry (Stage Manager / Associate Producer / Innkeeper )
Vic is a playwright, performer, and producer, and the driving force behind the independent production company Good Vibe Cinema. Though often found on stage, Vic is best known for her work behind the scenes as the founder and host of events such as the Hi-Desert Comedy Campout and the San Diego Halloween Film Festival. As a cultivator of good vibes and curator of good times, her work is grounded in a passion for bringing artists and audiences together through unique experiences that celebrate creativity, connection, and community across a wide range of mediums.
Before putting down roots in the desert, Vic toured the country with her fiancé and their award-winning Fringe show Desperate to Be Seen, Horrified of Being Known: A Ghost Story - a deeply personal piece that planted a lot of seeds. Since then, she has written and produced several Super 8 films and has co-created and starred in theatrical projects such as A Swingin' Seasonal Spectacular, Things That Go Bump in the Night, and a variety of works with The Laughing Bones Comedy Sketch Troupe.
Vic is grateful for the opportunity to be a part of The Karma Compound's inaugural production and is thrilled to be working alongside this incredible group of artists committed to bringing meaningful stories to life in unexpected ways.

Catt Christine (Pre-Show Vocalist & Immersive Performer)
Catt Christine is an accomplished musician and theatre performer with more than 20 years of experience onstage. She writes and fronts the High Desert–based original rock band Sailor Ripley alongside Mick Leonardy and Deacon Ledges.

As a featured musician in this production,
Catt is excited to bring together two of her greatest passions: live music and theatre. She is proud to be part of Karma Kompounds’ inaugural production alongside her best friends and grateful to continue finding new ways to create art in the desert with the talented people she loves. She hopes this production is the first of many opportunities to collaborate, experiment, and help build a vibrant local arts community.
Matthew Doherty (Lighting Designer)
Matthew Doherty was raised near the woods and farmland of Southern Massachusetts. After studying Postmodern Literary Theory, Studio Art, and Theater at the University of North Park in Chicago, IL, he began his professional artistic career by designing costumes, sets, and lighting for the theaters of Providence, RI.
